The best way to understand the science of why dialog is so effective with bodywork is to read Bruce Lipton’s book, “The Biology of Belief”. His writing is clear, easy and fun. Or, to get the “gist” of it, watch the 7 videos that are linked to this site, they are only about 10 minutes long each.
Dialog reveals the belief systems. Bodywork helps reveal the subconscious beliefs by changing the molecular protein structures in the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. This loosens up old memories and emotions that have been “living” there……”energy is neither created nor destroyed, it merely changes it’s form”. Dialog brings the conscious awareness that transforms these old beliefs and emotions, allowing them to take on another form…eliminating them from the physical body by softening tight areas, creating improved blood flow. Improved movement of energy which is blood, blood carries the chemicals that energize our muscles. Softer, more supple muscles are more flexible allowing more freedom of movement, which usually means less pain, improving ones capacity to be introspective, more relaxed, happier….which takes the body out of the “fight or flight” mode into the “growth” mode. Now the body/mind is ready to receive more positive “signals”, healthier re-programming can begin, awareness vastly improves, expansion is just beginning….
Some time ago, I was leading a workshop. Sitting in a circle were 6 women ranging in age from 27 to 77. Their task was to write down one word or phrase that characterized to them “what it means to be a good person”. They could write as many things as as they wanted but each thought had to be on its own piece of paper, we used small scraps of paper. When they were done, each person had about 20 scraps of paper in a small pile in front of them. Some of the women were surprised by the quantity, some were not. No matter, we began to compare them. What was discovered, however, took all of them by surprise…there was VERY LITTLE OVERLAP!
We often think…”Well, everyone knows that a good person is…….”.
We make the apparent mistake of assuming that everyone thinks like us when it comes to certain subjects. No wonder we get angry at others, we EXPECT them to think the way we do!
In this group, we had at most 2 things that overlaped with another but they did not all overlap with the same 2 things! There were other combinations within the group. We laughed, we cried…just imagine 6 hysterical females rolling around the floor!
Next, we combined them all into one big pile. THIS pile represents our cultural beliefs. Now, it’s no wonder that we don’t have enough time to do the really fun things we want to…we’re so busy trying to “live up to” the things in this pile!!!!!!!!
We’re so busy, most of us don’t make time to really think about this…..way more than half of the things in this pile are probably not important to us!
Next, comes the Medicine Wheel.
The Medicine Wheel helps us narrow the field, helps us shrink our pile, helps us to understand ourselves so we can make conscious choices, choices that have deep meaning for us as individuals. The Medicine Wheel is a cognitive tool: it can guide us, teach us, reveal to us, confirm for us, EMPOWER US as humans, as individuals, as communities, as Nations.
It helps us to focus on the things that are important to us so we can choose the “SIGNALS” that impact our biology.
